We may be drowning in the hundreds of original streaming titles that are released each month, but there are so many foreign-language movies and shows that are just begging for you to stream them. This week we have the directorial debut of world-renowned animation giant Hayao Miyazaki, a tour-de-force performance from Diane Kruger, a heartwarming documentary from French New Wave pioneer Agnes Varda, John Woo‘s high-octane Netflix action movie packed to the brim with doves, and an intriguing Danish semi-zombie series.

Let’s fire up those subtitles and dive into the best foreign-language titles of the week.

burning trailer

The hottest movie at Cannes has a very appropriate title: Burning.

South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong made a huge splash at the French film festival this week with what critics are hailing as the best film to screen at Cannes. Burning stars Korean star Yoo Ah In as well as The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun in a eerily sinister performance that is sure to earn him awards buzz once the movie hits Stateside. But while we wait for the acclaimed thriller to finish making the festival rounds, check out the Burning trailer below.

Weeks after YouTube Red saw its biggest hit of its short history with Cobra Kai, the streaming service is rebranding. Google has had YouTube Red rebranded as YouTube Premium — a loftier name that fits its slightly higher price tag. This is part of a shift around YouTube and Google’s overall media strategy, which has thus far been a bit of an incoherent mess.

Captain Marvel origin story

Origin movies are the bread and butter of the superhero movie genre. But while every superhero needs one, not all audiences want one. It may be because we’ve seen Peter Parker get bitten by a spider twice in the past two decades. Or because we’ve seen Bruce Wayne’s parents shot in an alley about 80 million times — even in movies that aren’t even about his origin. It’s no surprise that a few superhero franchises are foregoing the origin story altogether — Spider-Man: Homecoming leapt right past it, Guardians of the Galaxy throws you right into the fray.

But there’s no avoiding an origin story for Captain Marvel. Marvel’s first solo female superhero is relatively unknown to mass audiences, and thus needs a proper introduction, including a classic origin movie. But the Captain Marvel origin story may be a little different than what you would expect.

the handmaid's tale seeds review

(We’re going to kickstart our weekly The Handmaid’s Tale review by answering one simple question: Who suffered the most?)

Misery porn isn’t a term that I like to throw around lightly, but man, does The Handmaid’s Tale make me want to. I’m running out of synonyms for “bleak” at this point. It’s no surprise that the show’s sophomore season doubled down on the Emmy-nominated first season’s brilliantly bleak reflection of society, but there comes a tipping point when the despair starts to feel hollow. “Seeds” is that tipping point.

The episode is an emotionally taxing jaunt into a world where all the women we’re rooting for are utterly broken and find that there is something lower than rock bottom.

Netflix originals

Back in February, Netflix revealed its crazy intention to release a whopping 700 titles in 2018 — a number that even now sounds faintly preposterous. But three months later, the streaming service is outstripping its early visions for the total number of Netflix originals.

By the end of 2018, Netflix is on track to hit 1,000 total original movies, TV shows, and other productions. This happens just as Disney, Fox, and other big companies are beginning to vacate the streaming service en masse.

Avengers: Infinity War has added another record to its world-dominating box office run. After opening in China this weeekend, the Infinity War box office haul has officially reached historic heights — or should I say prehistoric? (No I shouldn’t, that makes no sense.)

Avengers: Infinity War has officially taken Jurassic World‘s crown for the highest-grossing summer movie ever. Now that’s pretty indomitable.

john lasseter return

Six months after former Pixar and Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter took a sudden leave of absence following reports of his sexual misconduct at the workplace, Disney is considering bringing him back.
